Huntsville-based Discovery Medical Center says hybrid care models may help sustain independent practices as traditional reimbursement-dependent models come under strain
HUNTSVILLE, AL / ACCESS Newswire / April 28, 2026 / Independent medical practices in markets such as Huntsville are entering a period of growing strain as Medicare reimbursement continues to challenge traditional care models, prompting providers to rethink how community-based healthcare can remain viable in the years ahead.
Discovery Medical Center says the pressure is contributing to a widening divide between practices built primarily around reimbursement and those developing more diversified models that blend traditional medical care with preventative, recovery and elective services.
“We are seeing real contraction in the market,” said Dr. Sam McGough, founder of Discovery Medical Center. “Practices that rely heavily on Medicare reimbursement are under increasing pressure. Some are reducing services, and others are closing. That has direct implications for patient access in our community.”
According to Discovery Medical Center, the issue is no longer simply whether reimbursement is tight. The larger question is which practice models can continue operating effectively as costs, compliance demands and reimbursement pressures reshape the economics of independent care.
Hybrid care models help ensure independent practice survival
That shift is giving rise to what Discovery describes as a hybrid care model, in which core medical services are supported by a broader mix of preventative, restorative and elective offerings that provide greater operational flexibility.
For Discovery Medical Center, that approach includes primary and family medicine, chiropractic care, physical therapy, veterans healthcare management, personal injury coordination, weight management and recovery services, and wellness and preventive support.
“What’s allowed us to continue operating is the expansion into preventative and elective services — care that patients actively choose, not just what insurance dictates,” McGough said. “There’s a misconception that these services are optional. In reality, they’re becoming part of what allows some practices to continue offering primary care at all.”
Discovery Medical Center says this model may become increasingly important for independent practices seeking to remain stable without relying exclusively on reimbursement-based revenue streams.
Patient care options may diminish in the new model
The implications extend beyond any single practice. As some providers scale back, consolidate or exit the market, patients may face fewer local options for ongoing, specialized or coordinated care. At the same time, practices that adapt successfully may take on a broader role, expanding the range of services they offer to support long-term health, recovery and prevention.
“We’re at an inflection point,” McGough added. “The model for how care is delivered — and sustained — is changing in real time.”
Over time, Discovery Medical Center says the independent practice landscape may come to look very different, with fewer providers relying solely on traditional reimbursement-driven structures and more practices adopting hybrid models intended to support both operational resilience and long-term patient care.
Discovery Medical Center believes that evolution is already underway and that practices able to adapt early may help define the next chapter of community-based healthcare.
