The foundation stone was laid by Sardar Dr. Satpreet Singh, PhD, Sardar Bijay Singh, and Sardarni Rupinder Kaur, all Directors of the Sikh Institute of Higher Education and Association. For Dr. Singh, the Akhnoor project represents more than the construction of a school building. The Sikh Institute of Higher Education and Association has adopted “Guru Nanak Khalsa School” as the common official name for schools established, operated, managed, or officially authorized by the Institute.
For the Akhnoor project, however, SIKHHE approved a specific one-time naming exception in recognition of the request of the local community and the historical and spiritual significance associated with Sant Baba Sunder Singh Ji.
Accordingly, the school has been officially named:

The exception applies specifically to the Akhnoor school and does not alter SIKHHE’s broader school-naming policy. Other schools established or officially authorized under the Institute’s common naming framework will continue to use the Guru Nanak Khalsa School name, subject to applicable approvals and institutional policies.
Dr. Singh said respecting local history and community sentiment was an important consideration in approving the exception.
“Strong institutions need both consistency and the wisdom to recognize meaningful local history,” Dr. Singh said. “Guru Nanak Khalsa School remains the common name adopted for our school initiatives, but the Akhnoor community expressed a sincere desire to honor Sant Baba Sunder Singh Ji.
