Backflip AI Launches CAD Copilot That Transforms 3D Scans Into Engineer-Quality, Editable CAD Models

Backflip AI today launched its AI copilot for CAD, powered by a new foundation model that converts 3D scans, STLs, and other mesh files into fully editable, parametric CAD models – complete with the feature trees an experienced engineer would build by hand. The copilot is generally available starting today in Backflip’s add-in for Autodesk Fusion and as a standalone web application.

Until now, turning any physical part into a usable CAD model meant hours of skilled reverse-engineering work at a typical cost of $1,500 or more per part. Backflip reduces that to minutes and roughly $10 – a more than 100x drop that makes it economical for manufacturers to digitize every part on the factory floor rather than a fraction of a percent of them.

Manufacturing teams are outnumbered by their CAD backlog

In manufacturing, CAD is the first step in rebuilding a broken part without off-the-shelf replacements. A failed component that stops a production line, a legacy part with no CAD file, and a fixture that needs improvements: all of these challenges land in front of one of the few people in the building who can find or recreate a 3D model. Those engineers are frequently at capacity, and each new issue means production slows or comes to a halt altogether while the queue keeps growing.

This backlog often isn’t new design work. It’s reconstruction: measuring a part that already exists, rebuilding it feature by feature, and arriving back where the physical world already was. Capturing a part with a 3D scanner can be taught in days, but turning that scan into a usable model has required years of CAD experience. Backflip closes that gap from both ends: it multiplies what a single CAD engineer can produce, and it lets anyone with a 3D scan or an STL produce a real, editable CAD model.

A foundation model built for 3D geometry

Core to these tools is Backflip’s second-generation foundation model, built from the ground up for 3D geometry. It was trained to construct increasingly complex geometry by chaining together CAD operations (extrude, revolve, pattern, and more) the way a human engineer works. The result is parametric models with full feature trees whose order of operations follows real engineering CAD conventions, so the output isn’t just accurate: it’s editable, in native CAD.

Agent loops layered on top of the model take this further. The 3D Scan to CAD tool can reconstruct a mesh, check its own work, then iterate to improve fidelity and dimensional accuracy. Two modes are available:

  • Fast mode: reconstructs typical geometries in a couple of minutes; and

  • Thinking mode: gives the agent more time to work through complex geometry for higher-fidelity results.

Backflip’s model powers a copilot designed to accelerate an engineer’s work:

  • 3D Scan to CAD: Reconstructs STL files and 3D-scan output into clean, native CAD models with real modeling features, not surfaces. Excels at moderate-complexity 3-axis CNC milled and turned parts.

  • Multimodal AI Search: Searches a parts library by text or photo to instantly find the geometry you need. An iPhone photo of a napkin sketch can surface the custom mounting bracket buried in your CAD library.

The key unlock was to re-think the underlying architecture. “Most frontier models have limited 3D comprehension that emerges more or less as a byproduct of their training on large-scale internet data. We built ours with 3D CAD operations as a first-class primitive and trained it to design the way engineers actually do – breaking down a bulk geometry, then rebuilding it feature by feature, operation by operation. The result is the first foundation model whose output you can open in your CAD package and just keep working. Today, that unlocks scan to CAD, and it’s the base on which everything we build next stands,” said Kairo Morton, Founding Engineer at Backflip.

Available today as an Autodesk Fusion add-in and on the web

Backflip’s AI tools for CAD are live today, with two ways to get started:

  • Autodesk Fusion: Backflip’s add-in to Fusion brings the copilot directly into an existing CAD environment, including AI photo search across a user’s full CAD library.

  • Web app: Log in from any browser with no install required. Exports portable .STEP files usable in any mechanical CAD software.

The technology is already in production with early customers, including a top automotive manufacturer. Plugins for additional CAD packages are in development and coming later this year.
